SYMPHONY FOR THE DANCE FLOOR KICKSTARTER UPDATE - 4 DAYS LEFT
As we prepare to bring SYMPHONY FOR THE DANCE FLOOR to Brooklyn Academy of Music next week, we're getting so close to our $7,500 Kickstarter goal. We have 4 days to raise a little over $1,000. Remember, if we don't raise at least $7,500, we won't get any money. It's all or nothing. We're coming down to the wire, but I know we can do it.
Please help us get across the finish line.
Facebook / Tweet / Text / Message / Email your friends. Pre-order the CD for $10-25. Get the CDs and T-shirt for $100. Tickets for the shows are on sale, but almost SOLD OUT!! You can get them here on Kickstarter but pledging $300 or more. Every $1 helps. We cannot do it without you!

SYMPHONY FOR THE DANCE FLOOR - BAM ARTIST PROFILES
We have an amazing lineup of collaborators in SDF and wanted to take a moment to introduce you to the core artistic team.

LORD JAMAR (MC/DJ) is an emcee, producer, actor, and director from the Bronx. He is a member of the hip-hop group Brand Nubian, which formed in 1989 in New Rochelle, NY. He is best known for his role of Supreme Allah on the TV series Oz and has appeared on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Third Watch, and The Sopranos. He has done production work for artists such as dead prez, UGK, Buckshot, Helta Skelta, and Peter Gabriel and appeared in a much-talked about episode of The (White) Rapper Show. Like his onscreen character on Oz, Jamar is a member of the Nation of Gods and Earths. Jamar can also be heard as “the Voice of the X Games” on ESPN.
CYNTHIA HOPKINS (Vocalist) is a writer, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and theater artist. She creates and performs unique multimedia performance pieces that intertwine truth and fiction and have won her a host of awards, including the 2007 Alpert Award in Theater and a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship. Through the process of making performances, she attempts to alchemize disturbance into works of intrigue and hope that simultaneously stimulate the senses, provoke emotion, and enliven the mind. She has also produced eight albums with her band, Gloria Deluxe. She is currently at work on This Clement World, a new piece addressing the climate crisis.
MILLICENT JOHNNIE (Choreographer) received both her BFA and MFA in dance at Florida State University. She has toured as resident choreographer and rehearsal director of the Urban Bush Women, and co-founded the Phlava Hip Hop and Jazz Dance Company based in Tallahassee, FL, for which she received a Prague International Dance Festival "best choreography" award and "First Place International Dance Title" for Hip-Hop Choreography for Wrath. Her latest work is the fourth choreographic installation of a five-year project entitled CANE, an interdisciplinary performance piece supported by scholarly research and film documentation informed by music, dance, and folklore of the sugar cane plantation experience found throughout the African diaspora.

JONATHAN MANNION (Photographer), a native of Cleveland, OH, began his professional career in 1996 by shooting photographs for the classic hip-hop album Reasonable Doubt by Jay-Z. In the years since, Mannion’s photography has grown alongside the culture he so loves, helping to visually define an era of urban music. Mannion’s images attempt to push the boundaries of his art by constantly re-examining and redefining the celebrity portrait. The influence of his work extends beyond the world of urban music. The broad range of subjects revealed by his lens include NBA superstars Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Shaquille O’Neal, and Magic Johnson, and seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong.

D.J. MENDEL (Director) is a director, writer, and actor. Recent theater credits include directing Cynthia Hopkins’ musical theater plays, The Truth: A Tragedy, Accidental Trilogy, the Bessie Award-winning Accidental Nostalgia, as well as Must Don’t Whip ‘Um and The Success of Failure (or, The Failure of Success), all of which were presented at St. Ann’s Warehouse in New York, Walker Arts Center, REDCAT, and Wexner Arts Center, and throughout Europe. He also works with Rosanne Cash, video designing and directing her tours. Other concert direction credits include St. Ann’s Warehouse benefit for peace in Iraq, and SPEAK UP!, an allstar event starring Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, Nora Jones, David Byrne, and Moby, among others.

MIRIAM NILOFA CROWE (Lighting Designer) designs regularly for Grammy-nominated and Latin Grammy-winner Lila Downs, Ko-Ryo Dance Theater, Nerve Ensemble, and The Drilling Company. Her recent projects include The Wonder (Queen‘s Company), AfterNever (Jonathan Pratt & Bow and Sparrow), James Weingrod, Life After Dark (Dana Leong), A Touch of the Poet (Friendly Fire), Séance (Active Eye), Flags (Firefly Theater @ 59E59), Woman in Waiting (Farber Foundry), Beowulf (Lincoln Center Festival), The $trip and Phenomenon (Nerve Ensemble), Frag (TALR) and The Designated Mourner (Cleveland Public Theater – sets, lights & costumes). She has a BA in English from Yale College and an MFA in Design from the Yale School of Drama.
