OFFICIAL DBR NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 2006

DBR & THE MISSION just got back from Las Vegas where they made 3000 new friends premiering a new track DBR was commissioned to create by the cutting edge software company MERCURY, combining J. S. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto and his Hip-Hop Study. The track, co-produced by DJ Scientific, was set to groundbreaking video by the world-renown VJ Culture, mixed live and projected onto a 50-ft screen behind the band, resulting in a powerful and mesmerizing aural and visual extravaganza.

Just 1.5 days later, the band left for the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Illinois to perform 24 BITS: Hip-Hop Studies and Etudes in 3 consecutive, near-sold-out nights. Then, next week, DBR and DJ Scientific are off to Melbourne, Australia, to present a sold-out world premiere of Sonatas for Violin and Turntables, a new addition to the DBR repertoire.

Image [Burlington, VT] DBR Flynn Center Residency & DBR & THE MISSION Vermont debut

DBR headed to Vermont last month to work with the Vermont Youth Orchestra as a part of a Flynn Center Residency. DBR joined the young musicians on stage at Dibden Center for the Arts and the Flynn Center to perform Voodoo Violin Concerto, No. 1, as a part of the orchestra's Dance Grooves concert.

Seven Days (Vermont's Alternative Weekly) interviewed DBR prior to the residencey:

Kids take a shine to Roumain, and not just because of his funky style. He intuitively grasps the common links between many types of music, making classical seem less, well, stuffy. “I’m really happy working with youth orchestras, and I’m excited about the VYO,” he says. “It’s because we’re sharing the same culture, listening to some of the same music. It’s the best of both worlds; you get the sound of the orchestra, but the attitude of youth.” - Read more

Burlington Free Press also wrote about DBR's working with the VYO. One young violinist said:

He played an impromptu duet with Mia Morrison of Lowell, who said afterward that Roumain's class was "different but fun." She said that, although she's not about to electrify her violin, she learned something about how to play with other musicians. "He really connected to me," she said. "He would look into you; it was, like, really strange. He could play together with you. He knew when I was ready to stop." - Read more

The residencey continued as DBR & THE MISSION made their Vermont debut with two sold-out performances of 24 Bits: Hip-Hop Studies and Etudes.

Image Pulsing now available on iTunes

DBR's solo electronica CD Pulsing has been chosen as an Editor's pick on CDBaby.com in the Hip-Hop Alternative and Experimental Classical categories, and continues to receive raving reviews, plus "selling like hotcakes" at live shows.

What people are saying

***** [5 stars] - Amazon.com review
Got a glimpse of his music on the national news and ordered a cd rather spontaneously - certainly no regret there - this music is original and the range is from soothing to "pulsing". I'm glad I found this artist.

***** [5 stars] - CDBaby.com review
Roumain's new disk, "pulsing" merges the exploration of pure sound with rich cultural references. It has its roots in the minimalism of the New York School, and the evolving history of black popular music. It unfolds abstract sound, and wraps it onto a rich musical tradition; a stunning package materializes. The violin performance of Filter is riveting.

Pulsing is for sale at all of DBR's live concerts, as well as these online retailers:

Image Klap Ur Handz

Lark Quartet is releasing a new CD “Klap Ur Handz” on Endeavor Records on October 10, 2006. The CD is titled after one of the movements from DBR's newly commissioned string quartet “Parks” (named after Rosa Parks). In this work, the players have to clap, a feature he says was inspired by hip-hop rhythms but dates back to Cro-Magnon man. "There's something really communal about that," he says. Do not miss the group's CD release performance at Merkin Concert Hall (NYC) on November 19th, 8pm.
